The OM352 Motor

The OM352 is the standard engine in the 406/416 models. The OM352A(Turbo) is too large to be installed in a standard 416. It is mainly the position of the turbo that is the problem. Space can be made on the Military spec. cab.

  OM352 OM352 * OM352A
Displacement 5.7 liter, 6 cyl 5.7 liter, 6 cyl 5.7 liter, 6 cyl (Turbo)
Power 92 kW (2800) 115 kW (3000) 126 kW (2800)
Torque 348 Nm (2000) 435 Nm (2000) 540 Nm (2000)

*Optomized

The OM352/353 series engines were produced over 3 decades to power not only the Unimog range but most Mercedes-Benz medium weight trucks of the time. Over this period, the engine was developed to supply optimum power for each application with fuel economy and longevity as important design parameters.

A turbo- charged variant of the OM352/353 was fitted to later Unimogs. The OM352A engine producing 126 kW @ 2,800 rpm had already proven itself in the Mercedes-Benz truck range.

Although in the pursuit of more power for older models it is problematic to retrofit a turbocharged engine to a U900 (406) or U1100 (416), it is still possible to upgrade the power output.

The focus of any power upgrade is on the BOSCH fuel injection pump that is calibrated at the factory to inject a given quantity of fuel into each engine cylinder at a specific time. On naturally aspirated engines, existing pumps can be upgraded to provide appropriate fuelling characteristics up to 97kW.

It is important to note that the injection pump governor on Unimog engines is dissimilar to that used on engines fitted to trucks.

Unimog engines use an EP/RSV governor designed to maintain constant engine speed set by the hand throttle when powering equipment driven by the PTO. Truck engines use an RQV governor designed for normal road operation where only the idle and top engine speed are set.

In South Africa the most common is the 352 ADE (Atlantis Diesel Engines) that was produced in the Cape under license of Mercedes-Benz. This motor has a few small changes, like injectors, air compressor, etc. This is the motor that was fitted to Military Unimogs, such as the Ambulances, and other. The Buffel was basically built on a modified 416 chassis with an ADE motor. One of the notiable differences was the axel radio, which enabled a top speed of 96 kph, as to the standard 88kph.

20 Speed Cascade Transmission

The following table shows the gearing ratios of a 20 Speed Cascade Gearbox.
The inter-shift column indicates the Intermediate Gear. And the bold figures are the normal drive gears. There is a total of 20 forward gears and 8 reverse gears.

12V Alternator

I have opted for an extra alternator, this one being a 12V. This is mainly to power the radio equipment, and such, and of course the rear box is all 12V.
